Rainbow butterfly cross stitch kit by Climbing Goat Designs - Unboxing and review

Hello everyone,

I havn't posted for a little while, don't worry, some more cross stitch designs will be coming soon. I have just been very busy finishing off my cosplay for this years London MCM. With it being only two weeks away I decided to crack on with it and not leave it until the last minute. (like last time) 

I took a break from sewing to scroll through some cross stitch focused Facebook pages and discovered to my delight that one of my favourite pages, Climbing Goat Designs is launching a new range of cross stitch kits of some of their most popular cross stitch designs.

You may have already heard of Climbing Goat Designs from their Etsy page ( www.climbinggoatdesigns.co.uk) where you can find a variety of modern, colourful and fun cross stitch designs. There's none of those stuffy designs like I find in my great grandmas stitching books (and cannot bring myself to stitch) but a collection of designs I can't wait to try.

Needless to say I brought one of the brand new kits as soon as possible. Currently they are available by messaging the Climbing Goat Designs Facebook page but will be coming to Etsy soon. There are seven different designs available in kit form currently but I will be going to be taking a look at the rainbow butterfly kit (since I fell in love with it the moment I saw it) Without further ado here's a little sneak peak inside my kit. 

First up, my kit came wrapped in this cheerful purple postage bag. As soon as it plopped down on my doormat I knew I was in for a treat. Almost felt like my birthday.

The kit itself comes in this cute little box with a very clear label. So if you needed to pop the kit in your stash for later it is super easy to find it again. :D Though I won't be keeping this in my stash for very long. 

Everything was packed inside nicely. It contained a piece of Aida, DMC threads, a chart, a beginners guide to cross stitching and a needle kept safely on a small piece of felt. 

A quick note here. I asked to pay a little extra for a slightly larger piece of fabric because I needed the aida to be a certain size for my particular project. The aida that comes with the kit by default is enough to sew the design with a little extra around the edges for framing or sewing (so no stitching to the edge if you centered  the design correctly) 

The chart included a bright front page with a beautiful photo of the final stitched piece so you can easily tell how it's going to look when it's all done. 

The chart itself is two A4 pages (other designs may have more pages) of black and white symbols. It looks like the symbols were carefully chosen as there were none that looked too similar to each other. I did not need to get out my reading glasses and squint to work out the colours. Also the symbols were not too small and the print out very clear which just helped with overall readability. 

Alongside the chart itself is the guide to cross stitching. This is such a thoughtful little extra to include in the kit. I imagine that this will help make these kits a great starting point for beginners. The guide is written in a friendly manner and runs through the basics of starting stitching a chart including how to find the centre of the Aida, the loop start method and going through how to create your first cross stitches. Each set of instructions comes with a clear set of photographs making them easy to follow. 

Don't you just love these colours!

The threads provided with the kit are all DMC threads and are all conveniently preorganised and numbered. It looks like there is a generous amount of each colour too but I'll update once I've finished stitching it. 

I was pleasantly surprised to see this, the amount of kits I've ordered with scratchy cheap thread all strewn about and tangled in a bag for postage this was a very welcome change. 

The colour key in the chart included the DMC numbers for each thread which I always appreciate in kits. Particularly if my nephew gets hold of my threads and decides to make chains out of them.(again) I will at least know what colours to buy if I need to replace any due to such mishaps. 

This is how far I need to go to get some uninterrupted stitching time, better pack a kit!

My first thought was that this little box would be perfect for a holiday stitching kit. Since the kit contains everything you need to start stitching. just bring your own hoop or frame as you prefer. I tried out my favourite small hoop (5 inches diameter) and it fit perfectly in the box with all the rest of the items. With this addition I could easily pack this in my summer holiday suitcase for some stitching in the sun! 

So to wrap up, I highly recommend these kits, they come in a range of bright and fun designs. The included cross stitch guide makes the kit brilliant for stitchers who are starting out or perhaps someone who needs a little refresher after being away from the craft for a while. The kit contains everything you need to get started and even have a handy box to keep everything safe and sound. 

Ordering from the Facebook page was really easy, just a few messages and a PayPal payment later and I was awaiting my new kit. The designer was able to kindly answer questions I had about the kit too. I heartily recommend the Facebook page, it was how I managed to obtain this kit before it was available anywhere else. There's also news, sneak peeks of upcoming designs and some adorable real life goats (some of the climbing variety) which really brightens up my Facebook feed.

Our cross stitch surprise box by Jenjen's cross stitch goodies and craft goodies

For a long while I had been wondering if there was such a thing as a surprise box for cross stitch fans. I see my friends at work getting their lootcrates and other boxes and wondered if I could order a cross stitch surprise for myself.

It just so happened that la few months ago I stumbled upon the Facebook group Jenjen's cross stitch goodies and craft goodies

This is a wonderful idea and just what I was looking for. All you need to do is join the Facebook group and keep an eye out for the announcements of this months theme. Every month has a different theme so there is something for everyone. Don't worry about missing the announcement it will be posted with a big pretty picture so it will stand out on your Facebook feed. Then, if you are interested in the theme you can buy this months subscription box (more about ordering later) and wait for your gift box to arrive at the end of the month.
One feature I really love is that this is not a subscription box. You only buy the themes you are interested in. So you only get items you'll love and can skip months where you perhaps already have a few items in your stash on this theme.

Last month the theme was Halloween (naturally since its the hot topic of October) so I ordered one surprise box for me and one for my lovely niece Chloe since childrens boxes were also on offer that month. I'm going to say now that I did receive my parcel a few weeks ago but since the page also posts to cross stitch fans in the US I left posting this review until they would have received their parcels so I didn't accidentally spoil the surprise for them, because hey, who likes spoilers?

So without further ado lets take a peek at what came in the package

The adult package

This is all of the items which arrived in the grown up parcel. The wooden keychain did not come pre-embroidered by the way. Chloe and I got so excited that we started sewing on them before I had taken pictures!
I got a lovely cross stitch design called Worried pumpkin by Cariad Cross Stitch designs. The design itself was very clear black and white symbols with a clear grid and a nicely marked center point. (which is vital for those of us who like to start in the middle of a design)

Another highlight of the pack was the hand died piece of Aida, since it was Halloween themed this dye gave the impression of smoke from a witches cauldron or a dark and murky night where monsters play. Since each piece of Aida is unique in its colouring I'm going to save it for a special spooky project.

I also got a few cross stitch essentials such as bobbins for your thread, a super cute needle minder in the shape of a pumpkin, a spare needle, spare threads (because who has enough of those) a pen for marking designs and some double sided tape.
If that wasn't enough there are also some super cute charms (shown in the right of the picture) and a raffle ticket. For the raffle ticket just keep an eye out for which number is picked on the Facebook page and one lucky winner gets an extra surprise!

The Children's Package

For this pack I'll leave it up to My lovely Niece Chloe to explain whats inside, please bear in mind again that the wooden shape for cross stitching did not come pre-stitched, we just stitched it before remembering to take a photo.

Hello everyone,
It was a really nice treat when I got my surprise cross stitch parcel from Jenjen's cross stitch goodies and craft goodies. My favourite thing is the wooden shape which has holes in for people to cross stitch. I sewed a little white bone on it since it was Halloween and I thought it would look good with my Halloween outfit.

I also got a piece of dyed aida, its the same colour as Gemmas package but in a bigger size (11 count) so its easier for me to sew. I have already started to sew the Pumpkin cross stitch design on it. I love the pumpkin cross stitch design, its a little spooky but not too scary so I won't frighten my Mum with it. :)

Finally I got some cool things to help me build up my collection.
The Hoop will be very useful, and the threads with some bobbins to store them on. The pink Pumpkin in the picture is a needle minder. I had not used one before, It has a magnet to hold your needle if you need to stop stitching and do chores which happens very often for me! There are also some Halloween charms which are awesome, I put the keyring on my bag and my friends are a little jealous.

Ordering

Ordering was really easy, from the Facebook group just send Jenna message to let her know which one you would like.
Jenna then sends you a Paypal invoice to your email to pay for your package. Don't worry if you have never use a Paypal invoice before they are very easy. Just open up the email, check the details are correct and follow the instructions, the Paypal website walks you through the entire process. Though I must admit it is even easier if you already have a Paypal account set up already.
Then you wait for the advertised posting date and as soon as the postman can get it to you you will have a lovely cross stitching gift to yourself.

Jenna is also super helpful if you have any questions about the items in your box. In the adults box I was actually unsure what the tape was having never used it despite how many cards I make (I won't blame you if you'd like to take away my cross stitching credentials now) However I sent a quick message to Jenna and she saved the day by explaining what it was and what its used for!
I think I'll be giving it a try when I need to finish my next Christmas cards.

Ordering the kids box

I'd like to make a special note about ordering the kids box. Jenna asked for Chloes age and I gave a brief overview of her sewing skill at the moment. Jenna was so lovely by giving me a little preview of the cross stitch design for Chloe's package so I could check that it wouldn't be too difficult for her to sew. That is just such a nice thing so I was sure that she wouldn't be given something beyond her skill at the moment and when I saw it I just knew she would love it. I was so right she has been sewing it for an hour this evening, she sticks her tongue out as she stitches its adorable. :)

The Facebook group itself is a lovely group to be a part of. There are regular updates with beautiful needle minders, cross stitch chart offers and much more just in case you feel like treating yourself.

Hello everyone,
Last weekend I went to Newark Comicon and discovered the stall of Zukiestyle who makes lovely handmade pet fashion items and has a whole load of dog and cat themed accessories for the owners too!

This is a few of the many bandanas which Zukiestyle had available at their stall. Its worth noting that the bandanas some in a range of sizes so that you can find one which can fit the smallest puppy or cat to the largest breed of dog.

Why not make your pet your cosplay companion with these superhero themed Bandanas?
I'd like to make a little note on the accuracy and neatness of all of the symbols which are stitched on to the bandanas. Each one is beautiful work and there is no mistaking what each symbol is meant to be.

If your pet does not like to wear a full bandana Zukiestyle also has a range of collars in a variety of themes so you can pick the one you'd like your pet to help you support. I'm actually very fond of the My little Pony collars. :)

Do you love Pokemon Go and take your best friend pooch to help catch Pokemon?

Twinkle Kitty Boutique - Super Kawaii jewelry and accessories

Hello everyone,
I recently had the pleasure of seeing the Twinkle Kitty Boutique at the Yorkshire Cosplay Convention 2016 at Sheffield Arena.
I was first greeted by two charming young ladies in stunning Kawaii outfits topped off with a selection of accessories of all shapes and colours but all super cute. (I was a little awestruck) They were ever so helpful in helping me find a cute hair slide to match my cosplay for the day. So if you ever see them at a convention why not pop over to say hello?

I do recommend the Instagram account, its just the thing for cheering a grey day, with lots of cheerful pictures of the products, impressive toy collectors and some lovely outfits for inspiration.

At first glance this looks like a box full of sweet treats but they are actually a collection of lovely rings. They come in a variety of patterns such as cakes and sweets and something a little more goulish like a gravestone or bats for the more scary Gothic Lolitas out there. 

 This is a sweet collection of bracelets and necklaces. I am in love with the little shop necklace its really different yet striking. 

On a personal note I love that there's a variety of styles of bracelet. Sometimes I'd love to go all out and wear something big and flashy but those do get in the way when I am typing so for work I'd choose something with less charms but a cute colour instead.

 Don't those chocolate necklaces look good enough to eat? But someone has already taken a bite by the look of it! tee hee

I love these Necklaces they are very bold and can definitely make a statement even on a plain outfit with beads all the way along and a large charm to catch attention. 

 I bet my lovely niece Chloe will definitely want some of these little bear necklaces. 

Down at the bottom of the picture are packets of hair clips, these are nicely packaged clipped to a piece of card with a nice design which matches the colour of the item. This makes me think that it would make a really impressive gift for a friend since the whole package is lovely. 

A big collection of the Necklaces on sale. My personal favorite necklace is the little star shaped bottles, they are filled with different colours of glitter which makes them look like bottles of fairy dust, Wearing one of these looks like it could add a little magic and sparkle to your day. :D

Hello everyone
This weekend I had the pleasure to meet the wonderful stall owners behind Geekly Clean at this years Yorkshire Cosplay Convention. I have been wondering if I should call them artists or potion makers in this spotlight due to the delightfully geeky theme running throughout their products.

Heres a few of the lovely things I spotted at the stall.

Yes that is Nuka cola flavoured lip balm in the background, with a sweet cola scent it will be hard not to use up the whole tube in a short time. I'm fairly sure you won't need any RadAways after using this lip balm though. 

At the front of this picture is the oddly named Unicorn Poop sugar scrub, though trust me it has a delightful vanilla and strawberry smell. For this item I got help from my lovely niece Chloe to tell you all about it.

Hello everyone, its Chloe here to tell you all about the Geeky Clean Sugar Scrub

The Unicorn Poop scrub is a pretty purple colour and even comes with a little sprinkle of pink glitter on top. My friend tells me that unicorns do fart glitter but only after they have eaten a rainbow so this comes from well fed unicorns. 

To wash my face with the scrub I only needed a little scoop so this pot is going to last for a long time. 

The scrub has little bits of sugar in it to help scrub all the dirt away (not that my face is that dirty). As soon as I started to use it it had a vanilla and strawberry smell which was not too strong. Even as we sit in our Pjs afterwards I still smell like a nice pudding and my face is all soft. 

These are some cool bathbombs, the Pokebombs and Pony Bombs contain a little surprise inside of a small toy which will only be revealed after the bomb is popped into water. The Sorting Bomb contains a small charm representing one of the Hogwarts houses from the Harry Potter books/films so why not pop this in your bath and see what house the bomb has sorted you into!

The Hey listen bomb is full of glitter which will turn your bath into a sparkly treat, luckily Navi does not come with it. I don't think I could relax in my nice bath with the call 'Hey Listen' echoing around the bathroom!

These look like they are going to be loads of fun particularly when convincing the geeky kids in your life to get into the bath. The only problem will be hiding them so they don't accidentally get used all at once!

This is another of my absolute favourite products. It has a nice refreshing lime scent to accompany the Cthulhu green colour. 

After a couple of uses I can confirm that I have not yet fallen into madness so this should be safe for even the most mythos savvy adventurer. Since Geeky Clean products are vegan friendly and do not use any ingredients tested upon animals so we can be assured that no animals or Great Old Ones were harmed in the making of this scrub. 

Give yourself a +1 cleanliness bonus to Charisma by washing with these generously sized soaps in Health, Mana and Poison varieties. After a hard day battling orcs and goblins you can clean up and take home some sweet loot in the form of a D20 dice hidden inside each bar.

Pins and Needles is a crafter I had the pleasure to meet at Emcon this year. The whole stall immediately grabbed my interest, not only for the colours and unusual dolls but the fact that each doll has a little card with a lovely little backstory.

Theres a wide variety of creepy cute designs. Unlike some creepy cute artists these designs do not focus on gore or have most things black. This is actually quite a refreshing change. Don't get me wrong I adore creepy cute but sometimes theres only so much black I can have before I long for some colour. 

There's a collection of keyrings to adorn your bags or keychains. They come in a variety of shapes including brightly coloured bats, scary staring eyeballs and colourful skulls. The skulls here are definitely my favorite with their unique detailing which reminds me of Sugar Skulls made for the Day of the dead in Mexico. 

Don't worry you won't have to try and read the stories off my pictures, each story is available on the Pins and Needles website. It gives each one a little personality and some insight into the design choices for each one. 

There's quite a few members to the Pins and Needles gang, though I will be keeping an eye on the Pins and Needles website to keep an eye out for any new recruits to the group.
I'm actually rather excited about the Alternative wedding toppers where you can ask for a pair of cute monsters based on you, your partner and your very own love story. You can even include a little monster for your pets or children. This does mean that there are so many possibilities for dolls that we should be careful about a potential take over. First the Pins and Needles craft room... then... the WORLD!  Tee hee.

Unfortunately I couldn't stay too long at the stall since the area the stalls were in were suddenly filled with a pack of rampaging Darleks. I'm not kidding there were Darleks all around the convention, I'd spotted them chasing Doctor who cosplayers, making plans to take over the world (loudly) and squaring off against superheroes. Since I didn't have my trusty sonic screwdriver with me I didn't want to take any chances and scarpered. 

Pins and Needles has a really great website to look through so you can read all about the dolls, their stories and find out about the upcoming events they are attended so you can see the lovely makes for yourself. 

I definitely recommend checking out the website, it has a brilliant offer at the moment for 15% off an order when signing up to their newsletter. Not only will you be able to keep up to date with news its a really good excuse to start a brand new collection. 

Now excuse me I think I may need to go and make some room on my shelf before I take advantage of that offer. :)

Hello everyone
On my recent trip to Emcon in Nottingham I spotted the delightful stall by Maz's Boutique and fell in love with everything on the stall. Its a good job I had set myself a budget for the Convention or I would have brought quite a few items. I did treat myself to a stunning black choker necklace and a hair clip featuring the tiniest, cutest hat I have ever seen.

I was fortunate enough to be able to take some pictures of the display to show you all so I'll pop those below.

I definitely recommend checking out the Facebook page, it has certainly cheered up my Facebook wall to see such lovely colourful makes pop up. Also I've spotted a few fan pictures of customers wearing their purchases so you can get a good idea what the clothing looks like on real people too.

There was a selection of cute and geeky themed clothing at the stall. The items which stood out most to me was the Pokémon and Star Wars items.

Heres a little sample of all the jewelry items I spotted. There are so many which would fit into a sweet Lolita outfit theme particularly the lovely pastel colours and the sweet themed ones. There were a collection which had little macaroons and a few which I didn't catch in the pictures had cute little sushi charms. Gosh this whole stand is making me want some nice treats now. :) 

A lovely collection of chokers and necklaces. Just check out that glow in the dark Batman symbol - how cool is that! I bet that would look very striking at a party.

 

There was also a collection of lovely rings in the shape of various little cakes and cute characters. You don't need to be dressed totally in Lolita fashions to wear such items though, a little cute accessory is a really subtle way to brighten up an ordinary outfit.

At this point I should stop squeeing over all the cute and give a little note on the quality of the items I brought for myself. The choker is fastened by a little strip of Velcro which is sewn on very firmly. Even when my delightful small nephew took a liking to it and whipped the choker off of my neck it still held strong. This is amazing since a few of my necklaces have not been able to withstand a sharp tug from his little toddler fingers!
