How to make a Shyguy costume mask - cosplay tutorial

Hello everyone,

This year I went to May London MCM as a Shygal. What's a Shygal? I hear you all cry, well they are female versions of Shyguys from the Mario games. From what I found out these creatures are only seen in fan art and have not been featured in the games. I assume in the games Shyguys can be male or female since we really can't tell while they wear those masks. This mask design can also be used for a regular Shyguy too since they are the same.

My costume is based on the Shygal in the Baby got DLC video found on YouTube (link below) hence the combination of a blue hood and pink hair.

While making this cosplay I didn't find much by the way of a tutorial for the mask, which is surprising since I thought that these little guys would be quite popular among Cosplayers. So this is why I decided to make a quick tutorial on how I made mine. There are a couple other Tutorials for masks made from foam and other materials but I decided on cardboard since this was meant to be my cheap cosplay. You can choose to use foam instead of cardboard but bear in mind that foam will bend more around the face. I find that this doesn't look right on the cosplay because the mask does not bend on Shyguys.

Anyway without further ado lets get this tutorial started:

What you will need:
Cardboard (I recycled an old cardboard box)
Paint in white and black
A pair of black tights or stockings (ensure they are thin enough that they can be seen through when close up)
Enough thick elastic to go around your head.
Stapler
Glue

Step 1:
Draw around plates to get two of the same circles on your cardboard and cut out ovals for the eyes on each circle. Make sure the ovals are lined up on both circles.

Step 2:

Get out your paints and paint one side of one of your circles white. Once the white layer is dry use black paint to add a oval for the mouth inbetween the eyes.

Step 3:

Take your pair of black tights or stockings and cut out a piece which will cover both eyeholes on your circles.

Step 4:
On the cardboard circle you did not paint use your stapler to staple the piece of stocking over the eye holes.
When stapling each piece make sure that the flat side of the staple is on the outside while the ends of the staple should be on the inside. This is so that the flat side of the staple will be on this side which is against your face. Trust me on this one you really don't want the sharp side of the staple rubbing against your cheek.

Measure out the elastic so it goes around your head but leave a little extra for attaching to the cardboard.
Once the elastic is the right size staple it to either side of the cardboard as shown in the photo. Remember make sure the flat part of the staple is on the outside.

 

The picture above shows the inside edge of the mask. As you can see the tights and elastic are stapled to the same side.

In this picture below you can see the outside of the mask. I have made sure the flat side of the staple is on this side as it is the side which will be against the wearers face. 

 

Step 5

Glue both halves together. Make sure to glue the inside of the stapled piece of the unpainted side of the other piece. 

 

The Cosplay

 

Finally to finish off grab a plain hoodie put it on and put on your mask. You can finish off the look with a pair of plain trousers and a black or brown belt worn over the top of the hoodie.

Here I am wearing a wig because I decided to be a Shygal but you can easily leave it off and become a Shyguy just as easily.

 

It is easy to see through this mask because tights are generally see through when you are close up. However it is a little like wearing dark sunglasses so beware visibility may be a little limited in darker environments. However when wearing the mask outdoors I actually had no problem getting about.

Hello everyone,
This post is coming up a bit late since I look so many photos at the convention it took a very long time to pick the very best ones. (trust me there were so many talented cosplayers I'm so sorry I have to cut this down to one post)

As for the convention itself it took place in the spacious Motorpoint arena which was filled to the brim with things to do, things to see and as always geeky things to buy. There were also a variety of talks, celebrity guests, board and video games to play.

Heres a little sneak peek of just how much filled the arena and just how many people came to have a great time on the day.

Lets take a look at some of the amazing cosplayers I found at the event:

Business Cat

This is a wonderfully clever cosplay of Business Cat, as you may guess from the name is a cat who runs a buisiness in an adorably funny way. This cosplay comes complete with milk in a sophisticated glass and a briefcase (which is presumably full of wool and treats.)

I'd like to raise a round of applause to this cosplayer for making the mask and of course for being able to wear it for so long considering how hot a convention can get even when not in costume.

The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland

This is an amazing cosplay, this cosplayer even took the trouble of exactly copying the make up and eyebrows for the mad hatter which must have taken ages to do.
If you take a close look this cosplayer has also included the row of threads that the mad hatter wears. I do wonder if this could also double as a holder for someone coming to the convention as a cosplay repair station?
Anyway this cosplay is just spot on and full of loads of detail. Well done!

Agents of Shield cosplay

Sheffield was almost in severe danger when Loki escaped into the arena! With Thor, Captain America and the other avengers busy buying comics and posing for photos it was up to the Agents of Shield to save the day and put Loki back into containment!
Luckily the day was saved and as always the Agents just took it as another day on the job while Loki redoubled his plans for revenge and to get the ultimate source of power. Who would have thought they would have hidden it right in the middle of a comic convention?

All joking aside this is a fabulous cosplay group, each one kitted out perfectly. I did spot one little boy hiding behind his father so Loki didn't spot him. Well done to all three of you for this amazing cosplay and an amazing well practice pose for photos!

Pokémon cosplay - Butterfree, Syther and Zubat

This trio of Cosplayers certainly drew a crowd when they walked into the Arena. The lovely Syther mentioned that their hat had already been knocked off by someone throwing a surprisingly accurate plushie Pokeball. There were a few people trying to take pictures of the cosplayers through the Augmented Reality function on Pokémon Go.

These beautiful gijinka costumes are colourful and fun. I love the way that each cosplayer chose the most important elements of each Pokémon so we know who they are meant to be. The wings on each one are especially awesome and Sythers claws being hold able items are a nice touch (since I imagine if they were firmly attached they could well get in the way)

Once upon a time - Regina

This wonderful cosplayer rocked the stage at the cosplay competition. (and scooped a well deserved top prize in the contest) not only is this villians costume amazingly detailed down to the beads and sequins this cosplayer really knew how to show off the Villian look. I had to resist the urge to hide after taking this photo as she did appear to be getting ready a particularly evil spell! However that is all part of the fun of the Cosplay contest to pretend to be your favourite character for a little while.

I wonder how long all those beads and sequins took to sew on to the outfit? By the sheer number on the bodice alone this must have been many nights worth of work and don't forget everyone that there are even more on the sleeves to be sewn on. Well done to this cosplayer for this amazing achievement! I hope you can use it for a few more conventions to come to really show off your skills.

Aurora from Disneys Sleeping Beauty

This cosplayer was so dedicated to her Sleeping Beauty cosplay that she took a little nap on the cosplay stage. Either that or making all the details on this costume just took it out of her since it is very accurate even down to all the shades of pink used in the costume.

I'll say well done to this Cosplayer for all of her hard work once she wakes up.

 

Jawa from Star wars

I spotted this cheeky little Jawa at the cosplay contest. I love all the little details on this cosplay and lets not forget the fact thet the leather areas are a little worn rather than brand new. That's a excellent touch since I don't think the Jawas would often be popping to their local clothes shop to buy themselves a new ammo holster.

On a side note this Jawa decided it would be a good idea to make off with some of the tech from the backstage team at the contest and almost took off with a microphone but luckily the team sprang into action and retrieved it.

Captain Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean

This cosplayer has done a wonderful job of  replicating the ever popular Captain Jack Sparrow, down the details, beard decorations and even copying the famous slightly wobbly walk that our lovable Captain always displays.

Take a moment to look at the way this cosplayer even has the Captains famous dreadlocks (I honestly wasn't sure if this was a wig or real hair) and even his collection of shiny rings because what pirate would turn down such a handsome treasure? The coat is an excellent feature in this cosplay, sometimes when a character has an element which seems plain such as the plain brown of this coat it is even more important to ensure that any details that do exist are correct as these will draw the eye. Indeed this coat does have those little touches from the cut of the sleeves to just the right type of brass buttons. Well done to you Captain Jack Cosplayer for your hard work is making the costume and emulating the character. :)

Red Guy from Don't Hug me I'm Scared

This is a brilliant version of the Red Guy outfit from Don't Hug me I'm scared. Don't worry its not a typo this character doesn't have an official name so fans have given him the name Red Guy. He is a person in a full body costume who stars in a childrens TV series which has a tendency to go wrong (or creepy)

This cosplay must be very hot since the wig is made mostly out of red wool and covers the whole head. also it looks like each strand of wool has been added to the hat individually making this actually a while lot more work than it appears to be on the surface. Well done to this cosplayer for having the patience to make this costume and the fortitude to wear it all day. I hope you had loads of fun at the convention (what you were able to see through the wool anyway)

Be warned however though it looks at first to be a childrens program this short film is not suitable for young children. It scared me in a few places I must admit.

Shaun from Shaun of the Dead

This is a cosplay I have seen a few times but I love the brilliant job this cosplayer has done on it. It looks like Shaun has already been attacked by Zombies and come out a little worse for wear in this picture. Theres one question we need to ask! Did he make it to the Winchester or is Sheffield Film and Comic con on the way? Whatever the case he looks like hes ready to fight zombies with his signature cricket bat, grab a pint and wait for it all to blow over.

There are so many more cosplays I would have included but unfortunately this post is getting very, very long. So I'll have to leave it here. I'll plan to head back to this convention if I can next year as I can only expect it to get bigger and better.

Hello everyone,

On 7th August, there was a wonderful convention at the Newark showground. With this convention being the first I was not expecting very much at all to be honest but I was honestly surprised and delighted by the event.

But without further ado let me tell you about this years event and some of the fabulous cosplays I found there.

As expected at a comic convention there were loads of comics to buy. There was a selection of comics to buy, from new to old from rare to cheaper ones for starters. It was a blast looking for my favorite characters. (I admit I spent too long looking for Deadpool comics)

There was also a large selection of geeky merchandise. I managed to bag myself a few special dice for my next Dungeons and Dragons game. I was tempted by all these lovely Star wars goodies though.

There were also celebrity guests, replicas of cars from various TV shows and films and several displays.

This is a beautiful duo of Anna from Frozen and Maleficent, both cosplays are amazing.
Though it makes me wonder what would have happened in the Maleficent film if she had a sister like Anna. how differently the film would have turned out... fanfiction anyone?

It was a very hot and sunny day so the convention hall was rather warm particularly with the crowd which had gathered. So well done to these cosplayers for standing the heat wearing long dresses and cloaks and still managing to look stunning.

 

This is a wonderful duo of Cosmo and Wanda from Fairly Odd Parents. I love the detail of the tiny wings and lets not forget the floaty crowny things which are held up almost invisibly. These cosplayers were so amazing I was worried they would Poof me out of the Showground!

 Boba Fett from Star Wars. This cosplay is wonderful each detail, even the weathering on the costume is just right. I hoped this cosplayer would not vaporize me with his gun.

This is a troupe of Star Wars cosplayers from the Sentinal Squad posing with a young Star Wars fan.

 

The Sentinel Squad raise money for charities at each convention they attend. At the Newark Comic convention they announced that they had raised a large amount of money for  www.heelandtoe.org.uk . This charity raises money for therapy for children with Cerebral Palsy and other physical disabilities to help with speech, occupational and physical therapies. 

However unexpectedly the Jawas tried to make off with the out sized cheque! Luckily Darth Sidious managed to keep those little trouble makers in line and the money safely made its way to charity.

This is a wonderful cosplayer who is playing Pink Catwoman giving some sass to the Joker who is helping to judge the cosplay competition

And this is Pink catwoman winning the cosplay contest. She was a little surprised to win since there was some stiff competition but it was well deserved. Well done, this is a brilliant cosplay and you wear it with style. :)

Cosplays spotted at MCM Londom Expo May 2016 - Part 2

Hello everyone,
I had a wonderful time at the May 2016 London Comicon and too LOADS of photos of many of the lovely cospayers that I met throughout the weekend. I have already made a small compilation of photos taken at the event, find the link here:

However there were just too many amazing cosplays for just one post so here we go again with another collection of superb cosplays for your enjoyment.

BB8 gijinka - From Star wars

This cosplayer has gone the extra mile by having her BB8 umbrella match her beautifully detailed dress. If you are not sure who this cosplay is this cosplayer has helpfully worn a wonderfully detailed BB8 hat complete with sensors and antenna.

Emily from The Corpse bride

I was wonderfully fortunate to catch this cosplayer while a breeze was blowing so her lovely shawl elegantly trailed behind her as she posed.
The skeletal arm is actually from a skeleton used for teaching anatomy. This is a practical approach to this characters skeletal features without having to hide the cosplayers own arm. I have seen a couple sversions of this cosplay where the real arms hidden within the dress but due to the nature of this wedding dress (no extra fabric to hide the arm it looks a little unusual.
I admire this cosplayers detail in dying the fabric, a light fade like this is very hard to but and even more difficult to turn into a working costume but the colour is just right for the character and the fade within the costume particularly the skirt is accurate.

Witch Bandora and Yellow Ranger Power Rangers

I was super impressed by the costumes of this pair of cosplayers that come straight from the power rangers series.
The Witch Bandora is a notable villain in the Power Rangers series whose appearances cover 50 episodes which is an awful lot of time for a villain to put their plans into action.

If you take a look at the Witch Bandora costume you can see that an awful lot of detail has been put into every piece of the outfit, from the sewn areas to the foam making up details and the very impressive staff. I was concerned that the staff was actually quite heavy considering the size but this cosplayer assured me that the looks were deceptive and it wasn't so heavy considering she had been carrying it about all day.

Toriel and Muffet from Undertale

I found these lovely and enthusiastic cosplayers at the Undertale cosplay meet up.

I love this version of Toriel, while some cosplayers used masks to make her snout this cosplayer used a subtle effect of the black face paint under the nose to give the same effect. It was quite a hot day at the convention so I'd also like to applaud both of these cosplayers for keeping their face paint intact all through to the afternoon when this picture was taken.

One big challenge for Muffet cosplayers is that she has 6 arms because she is based off a spider. I'd like to take a moment to point out the colouration on this particular Muffets arms, it looks like care was taken to make sure that all of the arms matched so at first glance you couldn't be sure which is the real one.

A big well done for both cosplayers in this picture, while there were loads of Undertale cosplayers and everyone used their own unique take on the characters I was especially fond of the details on these versions. :)

A Titan from Attack on Titan

 

This is such an amazing cosplay of a Titan from Attack on Titan bursting through a wall and peeking through the breach. Don't worry though, the wall prop comes complete with a little member of the Survey Corps swinging in to save the day.
The cosplayer actually spent the day hidden behind this wall prop which looked like it got in the way a little bit.


Trolls from Homestuck

 

Here's a close up of a bigger picture (see below) of when I found the Homestuck meet up, even though the comic has ended the Fandom and the fans enthusiasm for the show is still huge. There were so many Trolls, either characters taken straight from the show and after a few conversations I found there were a few fan made troll characters in the mix too. This meet up was great fun with cosplayers singing songs from the show and enacting scenes from the animations.

And here's the whole Homestuck meet up, there are so many fans here and so many awesome costumes. At one point everyone in the crowd just started singing a song from the comic. That's one of the things I love about cosplay meetups, you get the opportunity to meet so many fans, so many great cosplays and often songs, dances and re-enacting favourite scenes. (this very much happened at last years My Little Pony meet up)

Anyway that's all the cosplay pictures I have for now, I took loads more photos but I must get back to posting more cross stitch designs.

Cosplays spotted at MCM London Expo May 2016 - Part 1

Hello everyone,
On May Bank Holiday weekend I took a trip to London to the MCM comic con and as always I met some lovely people and saw their fabulous costumes. Today I'd like to share a few of the lovely cosplays I saw at the event. I know this post is a little bit late but I have had just so much to talk about from all of the lovely events I have been to this year that the MCM post just kept slipping backwards.

First I'd like to send a big thanks to everyone who took a moment to pose for a photo during the convention. Everyone was so lovely to meet and I do hope you all continue to make lovely cosplays and have a great time at future conventions.

Ariel from the Little Mermaid

This is a particularly stunning version of Ariel from the Little Mermaid. I must note that this cosplayer very naturally took a wonderful princess pose and a charming smile.
I later found out that this cosplayer actually specializes in royal cosplays - so no wonder they are so good at princess posing with plenty of practice.

Beaker dressed as Doctor Who

The award for best crossover I spotted definitely has to go to this stunning Cosplay. This is Beaker (of Muppets fame) dressed as Doctor Who complete with a sonic screwdriver and old style 3D glasses. This cosplay is really fun and inspired me to Google this particular crossover. I recommend taking a peek (with safe search on mind you)

Hiram McDaniels from Welcome to Nightvale

This has got to be the very first Welcome to Nightvale cosplay I have recognised. Now it is possible that there have been more of them around the events I have been to but the cosplayers version of a particular character is slightly different to how I imagine them in my head. Since there isn't very much official artwork and Fan art varies a little in details.

Anyway this is Hyram Mcdaniels candidate for the Nightvale mayoral elections and a LITERAL five headed dragon. I adore how this cosplayer has ensured that each head sits differently to help show that each head has its own distinct personality (and in the podcast a distinctive voice too)

Ma Dai from Dynasty Warriors

This is Ma Dai from Dynasty Warriors, I must admit I did fangirl about Dynasty Warriors when spotting this talented cosplayer. Though I admit I do most often play Bao Sanniang when playing levels with the Shu side.

There is so much detail in every aspect of this costume from the foam armor to the incredibly detailed coat. I must point out the lovely brush (yes this character does use a giant brush in the game) each strand is added to the brush separately which makes it look wonderful. I have seen versions of this weapon where the whole brush is a solid piece of foam but this is an effective way to make the weapon look realistic.

I must also point out the skilful making of the armour here and the sheer detail in the material used. Even down to the unusual shaped armour on the shoes. A friend has told me that this shape would actually catch weaponry so that the wearer of such shoes would not have their toes cut off. I learnt something new today. Hooray.

Dark Magician Girl from Yu-Gi-Oh

This is a cosplay of possibly one of the most recognisable Yu-Gi-Oh cards beyond Blue Eyes White Dragon. Its got a beautiful attention to detail and all that trimming must have taken a mountain of patience to sew on.
Well done to this cosplayer for a fabulous costume and even going all out to make the staff. I can't figure out how it was done, I may have to look this one up. :)

A collection of Deadpools and Spiderman

Since the Deadpool movie came out the frequency of Deadpool cosplayers has increased exponentially. This year it hasn't been unusual to spot loads of cosplayers all over conventions as Deadpool, some Deadpools are simply from the film or comics complete with swords and a variety of weaponry but some Deadpools come in another costume such as maids, street clothes or more ornate characters. However this fits very well with Deadpools character, I guess the amazing thing about him is that anything really goes and its still (probably) canon.

PS. A few years ago we considered playing a convention drinking game after the show ended, it was called 'See a Link, take a drink' I know its not very original but there were loads of Link cosplays. We considered doing it again with Deadpools but then realized we probably would not be able to make it home if we did so. :)

Looks like this Post is starting to get awfully long and I have so many more cosplays to show you all so looks like I'm going to have to be back soon with a part two .

Hello everyone,
On Saturday I took a little trip to Nottingham to take part in the fun at Emcon this Bank holiday weekend.
So I thought I would share some of the pictures of wonderful cosplayers I spotted at the event. I would like to thank everyone who took a moment to stop for a picture. I am always grateful when someone takes time out of their day to pose since theres always so much to do at a convention.

Without further ado here we go.

This is a costume of the Superhero Green Arrow - a bow wielding bringer of justice. I love the attention to detail in this costume as it comes complete with arrows strapped to the arms. This cosplayer has done a fantastic job on this one and has even perfected a pose ready to notch an arrow. Bad guys beware when Green Arrow is watching. :)

This is a brilliant Cosplay of Foxy from the hit horror game Five Nights at Freddies.
Foxy is a Pirate themed animatronic character which is why we see the details of the pirate hook and eyepatch. I adore the detail of the giant painted on mouth in this costume, it must have taken a load of work to get this accurate and looking so neat it is also a very clever way around having to wear a large clumbersome mask, making this version still very effective (and a touch scary just like the original character) but still easy to walk around a convention in.
Well done on this version of Foxy, I was almost a little scared to ask for a photo. :)

 

This is a cosplay of Queen Chrysalis - the Queen of the Changelings from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. As you guys may know I am a massive fan of My Little Pony so when I saw this costume I knew who it was right away. This cosplayer has effectively made a four legged character humanoid with careful use of details to make sure we know who it is meant to be. May I point out the beautiful crown and horn detail, I am actually very impressed by the detail even though the ends of each piece are quite thin. I also love the wings. I may have to have a go at making some myself.
Thank you for a wonderful cosplay, I am quite inspired to try my own My Little Pony outfit. :)

 

This is a Cosplay of Mabel from Gravity Falls.
May I point out that the stars on this costume actually lit up. It may not be quite so obvious in the photo but this is a set of Christmas lights woven into the jumper. Looks like these lights are battery powered rather than mains powered like in the original cartoon. (but then a mains powered jumper would be very impractical for a convention hall)
This cosplayer even came complete with a little Waddles plush toy which is just do adorable.

Missy from Doctor Who

This has to be one of my Favourite Cosplays I spotted on the day. This cosplayer even has a ready to take over the world pose spot on here. :D

Top Cosplays I found at Yorkshire Cosplay Convention 2015

Hello everyone, last weekend I went to the Yorkshire cosplay Convention at the Magna Center in Sheffield. I had a lovely time and met a whole bunch of lovely friendly cosplayers, saw lots of lovely events and took a whole bunch of Photos.

So without further ado here are a few of the best cosplays I saw on the day. However this should not be treated as a definitive list of best cosplays because Im fairly sure in an event with so many people I could not have possibly seen everyones cosplays, so if you were there and I missed you out I do hope I get to see you and your fabulous cosplay next time.

No Face from Spirited Away

This Cosplayer even went around giving chocolate coins to people and didn't speak a word just like No Face does in the film.

Beymax from Big Hero 6

 

This is a truly Epic cosplay, looks very hot though. You won't believe but this one was actually full sized and taller than I am. (though Im a little 5ft 5') The Beymax head is a hat so the person inside can pop their head out when they need to see. That's a really useful design feature. One problem with big cosplays like this is sometimes people can't see too well.

 

Vault Dweller from Fallout

 

Just look at this Fallout Vault suit. I just love the attention to detail on this one. You can't see it in the picture but he has the vault number on the back of the suit too.

Vaas from Farcry

This cosplay is completed by the well practiced pose by this cosplayer, the water bottle is a nice touch and probably came in very handy in a hot convention hall.

 

Giovanni from the Pokémon series

 This cosplay even comes with a cute little Persian plushie. Now that's some attention to detail.

 

 

Wayne and Garth from Waynes World

Who can top the awesomeness of this pair from Waynes world? I can't believe they even managed to track down the right T shirt for Garth. Fantastic.

Teto Kasane 

 

She even has her favourite french bread. she is a vocaliod who gets annoyed when people don't share their bread with her because she loves it so much. Isn't the wig just perfect for this character? I do wonder how the curls stay in all day, my last curly wig went a bit straight after the last time I wore it.

Last but not least my favourite costume I saw at the convention

 

Enderman from Minecraft

This enderman had glowing eyes which when I saw it scared the life out of me getting flashbacks from my very frist time in Minecraft I saw this creature through the hole in my dirt shelter it had just removed a block from. (before they stopped Endermen from taking certain blocks)

Enderman even had a giant dirt block which was ready to be signed by all of the special guests. :) Here it is being signed by Jackocalypse who was one of the special guests at the event.
